A Love Story? I Think Not.

They look nothing alike.

I’ve just been watching “Superman Returns”, and I’m completely outraged and baffled.

How is it that Lois Lane doesn’t notice that Clark Kent is Superman? The co-worker noticed. Lois’ boyfriend almost noticed. Hell, even the 5-year-old boy who only says about 10 words in the entire movie figured it out. But no, not Lois. And do you want to know why? Because she never actually looks at Clark. Ever.

Poor Lois is too busy being infatuated with Superman, whilst juggling her love of her fiance and son (who may or may not be the son of Superman). She’s clearly too busy to notice anyone that does not fit into her hectic schedule and full agenda. Poor, poor Lois.

If this this supposed to be a love story, I’m not convinced.

Maybe it is just a bad habit that I picked up somewhere, but I have a horrible tendency of looking at people when they talk to me. I don’t easily dismiss someone because I’m “busy” or “pre-occupied”. These are lame excuses. And in my opinion, there is no excuse for utter rudeness.

Besides, if you were really in love with someone, wouldn’t you be able to tell when they are around? I know that sounds kind of corny, and maybe a little bit overly-romantic, but think about it for a moment. No, really think about it. If the person I’m crushing on (or in love with) stands in front of me with glasses on, I would still recognise him or her. In fact, I would still be able to recognise the person if he or she was wearing a mask.

So how are we suppsed to buy the idea that Lois doesn’t recognise Superman when he’s dressed as Clark Kent?

Oh, hang on, I get it now. The moral of the story isn’t about being morally good and helping others in need. Instead, the moral is that as women, we’re only supposed to be looking at hot, strong, overly-confident, “Supermen” to fulfil our every need – and to forget about the hot work geek who has a bit of a multiple personality issue.

Oops. My bad.
